The mathematics of crime. Part one: In Court

13. březen 2019

In 2012 reporter Magdalena Sodomková was contacted by a stranger saying that he was in Bali, Indonesia, evading a prison sentence. He claimed that the verdict was unjust as a result of a forensic expert’s error. The reporter, along with Danish documentarist Brit Jensen, decided to track that expert, who is nicknamed “the crime mathematician.”

The first part of the five-part series takes us to the courtroom. It deals with the case of Tomáš Toman, who was put behind the bars due to an elite forensic expert’s opinion. However, the convict claims that the “crime mathematician” miscalculated. The reporters reconstructed Toman’s trial using authentic audio recordings. Who played what roles in it?

The Mathematics of Crime is an investigative feature series. It was originally produced for Czech radio, but never aired. Subsequently, it was published as an independent podcast.
